THE PEARL

The story is a simple tale about Kino, an Indian pearl diver. In the beginning, Kino lives a simple life, loves his family, and enjoys complete contentment; but the story tells about how his discovery of the most wonderful pearl in the world shatters his happiness. In the first chapter, Kino's calm life is interrupted when a scorpion stings his infant son, Coyotito. Kino's wife, Juana, insists that they take the baby to the doctor in town. Cruelly, the doctor refuses to treat the infant, for Kino does not have the money to pay his fee. In anger, Kino strikes out at the doctor and all he stands for when he bangs and injures his hand against the doctor's gate.
Kino returns to the beach with his family. He, along with Juana and Coyotito, rows out to an oyster bed, where he begins his work. After gathering several small oysters, he spies a giant one that reveals it has a pearl inside. He quickly picks it up and comes to the surface. Back in the canoe, he opens the large oyster and discovers the most wonderful pearl in the world. News of Kino's treasure travels rapidly through the town. Everyone is envious of Kino's pearl, and many think of ways to acquire some of Kino's future riches. During the night, someone comes into Kino's hut, searching for the pearl. The "dark force" injures Kino before he flees. Juana begs Kino to get rid of the pearl, which seems to be causing evil things to happen to them.
The next day, Kino dressed in his best rags, goes to town to sell his treasure to the pearl buyers. Working in a unified manner, they all tell Kino that his pearl is worthless and offer him a really low price. Kino refuses to sell the pearl and states that he will take it to the capital, where he feels certain he will get a just and higher price. That night, Kino is again attacked in his hut as the "dark force" seeks to steal the pearl, which Kino has carefully hidden. This time Juana takes matters into her own hands. She unearths the pearl and takes it to the beach to throw it back into the gulf. Kino stops her from her action and saves the pearl. He is so enraged at his wife's behavior that he knocks her down and kicks her. Obviously, the pearl is changing Kino.
On the way back to his hut, Kino is again attacked. This time, he stabs and kills his assailant. As a result, he and Juana are forced to quickly flee from La Paz. Before leaving, they discover their canoe has been destroyed and their hut has been burned. Kino now feels like a pursued animal, but he still refuses to part with the pearl. He, Juana, and Coyotito move through the arid desert, being closely followed by professional trackers who want the pearl. When they reach the mountains, Kino hides Juana and the baby in a cave. He goes to attack the trackers. He stabs and kills the first two of them; when the third one tries to escape, Kino takes their rifle and fires shots at him. One of the bullets enters the cave and kills Coyotito.
Juana and Kino return to their village to bury their child. The pearl no longer has a value to them, for all their dreams and happiness have vanished. As a result, they walk to the beach and toss the pearl back into the gulf. They watch silently as it sinks into the dark waters.
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar- winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the character and the sweep of the story.

We enter the alien world through the eyes of Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. But despite his broken body, lake is still a warrior at heart. He is recruited to travel light years to the human outpost on Pandora, where corporations are mining a rare mineral that is the Key to solving Earth’s energy crisis. These avatars are genetically engineered hybrids of human DNA mixed with DNA from the native of Pandora…the Navi.
Reborn in his avatar form, Jake can walk again. He is given a mission to infiltrate the Navi, who have become a major obstacle to mining the precious ore. “The Terminal” is the story of Viktor Navorski (Hanks), a traveler who’s stranded at John F. Kennedy International Airport after a coup topples the leadership of his homeland, the fictional Krakozhia. The new rulers aren’t recognized by the United States, so Viktor finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place, unable to enter the U.S. and unable to fly home because his passport is no longer valid. He’s told ‘America is closed’ and is forced to wait out the war in the international terminal, passing the time learning English, hanging out with a few sympathetic airport workers, falling for a stewardess, and trying to avoid causing further problems for the airport’s homeland security official (played by Stanley Tucci).
“The Terminal” benefits from the artistically uncomplicated meshing of good buddies Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Band of Brothers” and “Catch Me If You Can”) but really misses the mark when it incorporates an ill-conceived love story between Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones into the plot. As Viktor, Hanks is genuine and appealing, making it near impossible not to have sympathy for his plight. But throw Zeta-Jones into the frame as a stewardess who admits to always getting involved with the wrong men, and the movie becomes a muddled mess. Zeta-Jones does nothing to make audiences empathize with her character’s inability to find true love. Pairing her with Hanks, as likeable as his character is, sends the movie off on a tangent that almost – but, thankfully, not quite - kills the film. And let’s just be brutally honest: Catherine Zeta-Jones is gorgeous. Even if you don’t admire her acting talent, you have to admit she’s a very beautiful woman. Not to knock Hanks, but come on, he’s not exactly in the same league as Zeta-Jones. If you plop them outside the movie world and into reality, would someone like Zeta-Jones instantly fall for this weird guy who stalks her in an airport? I don't think so. I didn’t believe the quick pairing of these two in the movie, and sadly, the love story is an unnecessary distraction in an otherwise entertaining and moving film.
“The Terminal” does provide an answer to the perplexing question of what happens to all the items lost in an airport. And the cast of characters who interact with Hanks – Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Stanley Tucci, Chi McBride, Barry Shabaka Henley, and especially Kumar Pallana – all add a lot of humanity and charm to the picture. If only Spielberg had erased the romance from the script and added in a little more time with each member of the interesting ensemble of actors who portray the airport workers, then “The Terminal” would have really achieved something special. But with the love story in place, “The Terminal” stretches the limits of believability beyond what I was willing to forgive.

CHARLIE AND CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) has built the greatest and largest chocolate factory in the world. After some of his workers steal his secret recipes, Willy Wonka kicks his workers out and closes the doors. For 15 years, no one has seen any workers entering or leaving the factory, yet his chocolate candy is still being produced and shipped around the world. One day when Willy Wonka is getting his hair cut, he realizes that he is getting old, and he needs a successor. He comes up with a plan to open his factory and reveal his secrets to five lucky children, who find golden tickets inside Wonka chocolate bars.

The golden tickets are sent around the world and soon 4 winners are announced. The first to find a ticket is the greedy Augustus Gloop (Philip Wiegratz). Second is the spoiled Veruca Salt (Julia Winter). Next is the competitive gum-chomping Violet Beauregard (AnnaSophia Robb). Fourth is the chocolate-hating techie Mike Teevee (Jordan Fry). There is one golden ticket left, and the achingly poor Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) finds it. Charlie chooses his Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) to accompany him inside the factory, a place his Grandpa Joe once worked before it was closed. The other four children with their parents, and Charlie with Grandpa Joe, enter the factory and begin the tour of a lifetime.

The factory is not like your standard factory, but a living factory which mixes chocolate by waterfall, and boasts a river of chocolate that enables the group to tour the factory by boat. They experience the great glass Wonkavator, which can go anywhere in the factory, in any direction, at the touch of a button. During the tour, the group learns that all the work is now being done by the Oompa-Loompa tribe, who are paid in cocoa beans. The factory is indeed fantastic: trees and grass are edible, trained squirrels shell nuts for the chocolate bars, entire meals are contained in a stick of gum, and incredible technology allows chocolate to be sent by television. The four rotten children get to interact with some of Willy Wonka's fantastic inventions with unfortunate consequences which force them off the tour before it is completed. Charlie is the last child left, and Willy Wonka awards Charlie the greatest prize of all, the keys to the factory, which Charlie refuses. Accepting the prize means living Willy Wonka's life: cut off from family and the world to devote oneself to the pursuit of chocolate perfection. After some time, Willy Wonka sees that while Charlie may be the right person for the factory, the life that Willy Wonka chose for himself isn't right for Charlie. He relents and allows Charlie to bring his entire family into the factory with him, and they all live happily ever after.
